The Tin Can Island Port Command and the Port Terminal Multi-Services Limited Commands, Nigeria Customs Service, this Thursday evening engaged in a joint physical excercise aimed at improving and sustaining healthy body and mind.

The weekly excercise which kicked of last Thursday is a culmination of the Work-Life Balance Initiative of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi (PhD). Officers from both Commands as well as some stakeholders had gathered in large numbers to take part in the gruelling excercise sessions.
The activity started with the normal physical excercises, but the yoga session was even more intense with different postures and slow, but physically demanding movements. The whole excercise lasted about an hour after which participants engaged in such sports as badminton, table tennis and football.

The public relations officer of the TCIP Command, Chief Supretendent of Customs, Oscar Ivara said after the excercise “The purpose of this activity is to make sure that officers engage in physical excercises that contribute to healthy body and mind. We know that our core mandates are to facilitate trade, protect the national economy and generate revenue, but these can only be effectively carried out if officers are healthy. A healthy officer is a healthy Service”. He added.
Deputy Comptroller of Customs Azikiwe Ejidoh, the administrative head at the TCIP Command spoke to us in the absence of Comptroller Joseph Anani who was called to duty before the end of the excercise. He said “The essence of this excercise is to build a healthy and strong work force that will give the Service the needed results in terms of our core mandates for Nigeria. We had it last Thursday and it is a weekly excercise of course, but today, we decided to have the session with our sister Command, the PTML Command. This is to continue to strengthen our relationships as we are one Customs. There is a saying which goes like this ‘healrh is wealth’, so everyone should participate in these excercises”. He concluded.
Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Nura Ibrahim Miko, the Acting Customs Area Controller of the PTML Command also spoke to us on the activities of the day. He said “In line with the Work-Life Balance Initiative of the CGC and in the spirit of cooperative engagements, the two sister Commands decided to have this joint physical excercise session bringing in yoga as part of the excercise”.

His words “The routine excercise continues every Thursday and it is open to everybody to take part in. We invite everyone to join in this healthy activity as we all want healthier and stronger citizens”
The Work Life Balance Initiative of the CGC has taken root within the NCS and different Commands choose which day of the week to engage in these activities. Some observers that spoke to us expressed the wish that this excercise routine becomes a big part of the health culture of the Nigerian society.
