Concerned Nigerians especially those who are desirous of stable democracy and good governance are reacting to the recent incident in Edo State. Some yet to be identified persons shot at a political gathering attended by some prominent Nigerians including Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 flag bearer for the Labour Party in the presidential election.
As more Nigerians react to the unfortunate incident, Comrade Chinedu Ukatu, the president of the Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association (NPMA) has lent his voice to calls for a proper investigation into the matter. A letter released from his office reads:
The President of Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association, Hon Comrade Chinedu Ukatu (Ike ndi Ahia), strongly condemns the attack on the flag bearer of the Labour Party in 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, and former National Chairman of APC and former Governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie Oyegun in Benin, Edo State.
We view this incident as a disturbing attempt to intimidate and undermine the democratic process. We believe that all candidates have the right to campaign, move freely, and safely in all parts of the country. I equally condemn the use of hate speeches and unwarranted attacks on the leadership of the country; we should be able to criticize constructively.
The Federal Government must ensure justice and fairness to all. I call on the authorities to ensure the security of all aspirants and investigate this incident thoroughly. The trading public will not take kindly to political gladiators who resort to violence, because our business will be thwarted if the democratic process is endangered.
We urge all Nigerians to reject violence and promote peaceful politics. As the President of Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association, the umbrella union of major markets Association in Lagos, we stand with every aspirant and all those working towards a better Nigeria.
