It was all joy and excitement on Thursday at the Christ Assembly Nursery and Primary School, Rasaki Street, Olodi Apapa, Lagos as dignitaries gathered for the commissioning of the renovated and well equipped school.
The occasion was made a reality after the Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service had leveraged on the newly set up corporate social responsibility unit called ‘Custom Cares’ to renovate the school, providing chairs and tables, equipped the information and technology room and also purchased over 2,000 other learning materials for the pupils.

The officer at the helms of Customs Cares is Comptroller M I Ibrahim, she kicked off the commissioning of the project with a remark thanking the Customs Area Controller of the TICP Command, for embarking on the project. She also admonished the management of the school to put the renovated school and all the learning materials provided into good use.
Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs in charge of Zone A, Charles Orbih in his remark noted that the NCS does not just carry just out its original mandates, but also engages in corporate social responsibility. This, he says has been evident in the launch of the Customs Cares in Abuja earlier this year with the Apapa Area Command kick starting the renovation of schools in the South West Zone of the Service. He added that the NCS is committed to CSR for sustainable development and for posterity.

The ocassion also saw brief entertainment by an eyo group and other colourful cultural displays.
A member of the federal house of representatives representing the Ajeromi/Ifelodun federal constituency, Paul Adeboye Kalejaye also weighed in on the feelings of the people of the area as he said “I want to congratulate the NCS for the noble gesture of renovating and equiping of the Christ Assembly Nursery and Primary School”.

Oba Maroof Ayokunle Oluwa, the Olu of Iwa and Apapa kingdom also thank the TICP Command and indeed the entire members of the NCS for carrying out the project as he noted the excitement of the faces of teachers and pupils of the school.
The chairman of the Ajeromi/Ifelodun local government, Mayor Fatai Ayoola said that “the people of this community are very peaceful and desire such development, I implore the NCS to do more for us”.
The commissioner for basic education in Lagos State, Tolani Alli-Balogun reiterated the desire of the state government to see continuous improvement in the quality of education and their wish to continue to partner private individuals and other government agencies in leveraging the policies of the State government on education.
The headmistress of the school Mrs. Esther Ogunfuyi in her speech said “By renovating our school, you have given us a renewed sense of pride and hope, and by adopting us, you have gone even further, you are committed to walking this journey by offering continued support and partnership that will shape the future of our learners”.

Her words “We do not take this for granted, your generosity has created a safer, more inspiring and more dignified environment for teaching and learning”.
The Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi on his part said that “our target in 2025 under our CSR programme is to directly reach out to 50,000 students in terms of provisions of school bags, notes, school shoes, rain jackets, umbrellas and all of that. So far we have done about 10,000 out of which 3,000 are from Lagos. Today we are going to reach out to 2,000 school pupils and we have all of these learning aids which we are going to give to them. We are committed to providing a better learning environment to them”
“In health delivery, our target is to reach out to 10 million Nigerians through our various intervention programmes. It is our belief that what we are doing is in line with the mandate of the Nigeria Customs Service in our corporate social responsibility obligation”.
It should be noted that the Christ Assembly Nursery and Primary School had all the physical structures at an alarming rate of deterioration before the intetvention by the Time Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service. Again, the school has additionally been equipped with computers and different learning aids to bring up the pupils to speed with modern learning technique.

On his part, the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of Tin Can Command, Comptroller Frank Onyeka in a closing remark thanked the CGC for the opportunity to serve and be a part of the laudable initiative. He noted that “the excitement from the headmistress is enough to encourage us to do more” as he appreciates all stakeholders at the Command, for their support and partnership on the project.

“I really want to commend the Headmistress of the school and the Executive Secretary on education, teachers, pupils and the Comptroller-General of Customs for their determination and roles in making sure that the project became a success”, the CAC concluded.
