The main hall of the Festival hotel, FESTAC town Lagos was all busy Friday as the members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) gathered to elect their executive committee members. It was a unanimous decision where Comrade Francis Bunu Abi was chosen as the new President-General of the Union for the next four years.
The outgoing PG, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju also emerged as the pioneer Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Union.
Comrade Bunu Abi who came in from the Seafarers Union was elected at the 6th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference in Lagos. He also announced the emergence of Adeyanju as the Board of Trustees (BOT) chairman in his acceptance speech which is in line with the constitution and that any outgoing President General of the union automatically emerges chair of the board.

Raji Abdulateef – National Trustee
Mukhaila Lawal – Treasurer
Boniface Udoh -Vice President
Martina Njoku – Vice President
Ibrahim Ohize – Vice President
Ganiu Dosunmu – Vice President
Funmi Fasan – Deputy President
Taofeek Dahiru – Deputy President
Abubakar Bello – Deputy President
Francis Bunu – President General
The newly elected President General expressed satisfaction over the industrial peace that existed during the electioneering period while stating that the outgoing President General’s sterling performance locally and internationally, will be indelible in the minds of most people and cannot be forgotten in a hurry.


He aslo admonished the maritime stakeholders to collaborate with each other in other to facilitate growth and development of the sector.
In his address, Prince Adeyanju called on members of all four branches of MWUN to work closely with the new PG, urging them to extend the respect accorded him to the new helmsman.
He added that Bunu’s administration has what it takes to surpass past administrations considering the caliber of personalities in the new executives.
Comrade Adeyanju affirmed that continuity should be the watchword under the new administration while appealing for the executives from the units, districts, branch and national across the four branches to respect the leadership of Comrade Bunu.
The outgoing PG maintained that the new team has what it takes to surpass the existing legacies achieved so far als he urged that respect is reciprocal.
He described Bunu as a son, friend and brother that has the capacity to perform, even as he appealed to the union members to accord him that same respect that they showed him.
In all, the high point of the delegates conference was the emergence of the new national executives as declared by the Congress.
It should be noted that following the successful election, Bunu and others were elected unopposed.
