WORLD MARITIME DAY 2026: THINK-TANK IMION ACCELERATES NIGERIA’S SHIFT FROM POLICY TO PRACTICE

As Nigeria stands with the global community to celebrate the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) World Maritime Day, the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) has issued a definitive call to action, demanding a decisive shift from merely ratification of maritime treaties to rigorous operational execution across the nation’s ports, maritime domains, and inland waterways.
Responding directly to the 2026 global theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” the Director-General of IMION, Rear Admiral Thaddeus Christopher Udofia (rtd), Ph.D., emphasized that high-level regulatory frameworks only manifest true economic power when translated into highly specialized, frontline human capacity.

“Knowledge without execution is a stranded asset,” Rear Admiral Udofia emphasized. “The absolute metric of Nigeria’s success does not sit on signed treaties. It lives in the active security, digital optimization, and regulatory discipline we cultivate daily across our ports and logistics corridors. Transitioning from paper blueprints to practical execution is where maritime excellence is born.”

In alignment with this year’s focus on practical achievements, IMION warmly congratulates the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) on its monumental milestone in global diplomacy and maritime safety. These efforts recently culminated in Nigeria’s historic return to the IMO Category C council status after 14-year absence, alongside the landmark decision by the United States Coast Guard to lift its 12-year port security restriction (Condition of Entry) on vessels arriving from Nigeria.

This extraordinary milestone follows the successful delisting of Nigerian vessels from stringent entry conditions, driven by the FGN’s multi-agency Deep Blue Project which has maintained a record of zero piracy incidents for over three consecutive years. IMION applauds the administration’s relentless focus in restoring international confidence, a fate that is already yielding lower operational complexities and providing an economic shield for shippers nationwide.

Conceived as a premier research-based centre of excellence and strategic think-tank by the Nigerian Navy, IMION has successfully trained over 500 core maritime stakeholders and C-suite executives across diverse blue economy disciplines since its inception. This targeted focus directly bridges the critical gap between domestic policy ideals and the practical capabilities of the frontline workforce.
To institutionalize global best practices, IMION has established strategic learning pathways and technical knowledge-sharing networks with international maritime institutes, academic partners, and global strategic. A notable domestic milestone is IMION’s dynamic operational pact with the Admiralty University of Nigeria (ADUN) to pioneer joint, high-profile executive programs designed to rapidly translate maritime intelligence into concrete field actions.

• Strategic Blue Governance: Spearheading the Executive Course on Strategic Leadership for the Centre of Excellence for Blue Economy, equipping top government administrators and private sector executives with robust change-management frameworks.

• Port Logistics Revolution: Hosting the landmark Logistics and Trade Facilitation summit and deploying a stakeholder-backed 5-Year Port Transformation Plan to optimize trade corridors, reduce transaction friction, and eliminate supply chain bottlenecks.

• Fisheries & Scientific Reform: Unveiling a data-driven 5-Pillar Plan to Revive Nigeria’s Fisheries Sector—collaborating on scientific fish-stock assessments, modern coastal lagoon cage culture, and satellite spatial planning to guarantee national food security.

• Advanced Intelligence Training: Conducting specialized workshops focus on Maritime Security and Global Trade, deploying practical solutions to counter risks and protect critical trade infrastructure across the Gulf of Guinea.

• Mass Media Empowerment: Institutionalizing and subsidizing the Blue Economy Course for Media Practitioners, to elevate the accuracy, depth, and reporting standards of maritime journalism nationwide.

• Future-Proof Curricula: Aligned its professional courses directly with the latest STCW Convention revisions, actively preparing the next generation of Nigerian seafarers for automation, green shipping technologies, and a decarbonized maritime future.

As an elite research institute and national think-tank, IMION remains unyielding in its mission to fuel the empirical research, data stream, and technical mastery required to convert executive mandates into triumphant maritime realities—solidifying Nigeria’s status as the undisputed maritime hub of the Gulf of Guinea.

IMION extends its warmest congratulations to the Federal Government of Nigeria and all maritime practitioners on this stellar, calling for seamless, unbroken institutional collaboration to power Nigerian maritime excellence into the future.
