The Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association (NPMA), a union of over 58 major markets in Lagos State expresses deep concern over the recent closure of Onitsha Main Market, Onitsha Main Market is one of the biggest markets in West Africa and an entry point of millions of traders across the globe.
A press statement that was released from the office of the president Comrade Chinedu Ukatu points out the effects of the total shutdown of the market, noting that the traders at the market have been suffering huge losses ocassioned by the closure.
The market was shut down by Prof Charles Soludo, Governor of Anambra State on grounds that the traders refused to open their shops on Mondays citing economic sabotage.
The statement says “This abrupt action has inflicted significant hardship on thousands of traders, their families, and the wider trading community who rely on the market for their livelihoods and daily essentials”.
The president’s words “On behalf of Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association, I respectfully appeal to the Governor to reconsider this decision and promptly reopen the market”.
“The closure has not only disrupted the economic well-being of our members but also strained the supply chain of essential goods and services in the region,and across the globe affecting countless citizens including members of my noble Association”.

The president appeals to Governor Soludo saying “We acknowledge that the government cited economic sabotage as the major reasons leading to this decision. However, we appeal to the Governor to put all necessary security in place within and inside the market to guarantee their safety”.
“We also observe that banks don’t operate in the state on Mondays, and Airlines don’t operate or fly into Anambra on Mondays too.
If all all mechanism that facilitate trade aren’t operational on Mondays it may be difficult for traders to open shops on Mondays too , therefore we urge the Governor to engage in constructive dialogue with market leadership and relevant stakeholders to find a mutually beneficial resolution”.
It should be noted that the Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo on Monday this week ordered a complete shutdown of the Onitsha main market for their regular observance of the sit-at-home order issued by the Indeginious Peoples of Biafria, IPOB, a group fighting against perceived injustices on Igbos.
The NPMA president notes that the Organisation stands ready to collaborate with the state government to address any issues, ensuring the market operates safely, efficiently, and in a manner that benefits all parties involved.
He added that “reopening the market will alleviate the suffering of our members, restore economic activity, and contribute to the growth and development of Anambra State and Nation at large . We trust that the Governor will heed this appeal and take swift action to resolve this pressing issue”.
“We also call on other relevant authorities and stakeholders to intervene and facilitate a lasting solution. NPMA remains committed to working with all parties to ensure markets in Nigeria operate in a secure, conducive environment for traders and consumers alike”. The statement concluded.
